Inside Diana Ross’ incredible life as she makes UK comeback for Platinum Jubilee

There's no better time for a comeback than on the grand Party at the Palace stage for the Queen's 70th jubilee, and Diana Ross is doing exactly that.

In truth, the soul singing legend doesn't really need an introduction, but she sure as heck deserves one.

The 78 year old powerhouse has earned her right to the royal stage, what with more than 100 million album sales under her belt as both a member of the Motown group, The Supremes, and as a solo artist.

For sure, the mum of five has come a long way from Detroit and is back with global 'supremacy' as she prepares to close the show at Party at the Palace, and then take her stand in the Glastonbury Legends slot 2022.

In the meantime, let's take a look back at the star's extraordinary life and career, spanning more than 50 successful years.

Career highlights

Cast your minds back to the 1960s, when girl group The Supremes shot to fame.

They fast became one of Motown's most successful acts, and became the world's best-selling girl group of all time.

And to make things even sweeter, Diana was their lead singer.

They released toe-tapping hit after hit including the likes of Baby Love and Where Did Our Love Go?

But in actuality, this was just a drop in the ocean of success for Diana, who quit the group in 1970 to embark on a solo career, which is where things really started happening for her.

Ain't No Mountain High Enough, her debut single, went to number one and she continued to bag all manner of top 10 hits with tracks including My Endless Love and Chain Reaction.

She has, in total, more than 70 top songs under her belt and is even recognised by The Guinness Book of World Records as the greatest female artist in US and UK chart history.

Family life

Diana married Robert Ellis Silberstein in 1971 before the couple divorced.

Together, they had two children: Tracee Ellis Ross and Chudney Ross.

Diana then married Arne Naess, Jr. with whom she shares sons Evan Ross and Ross Naess, but the couple split in 2000.

She also has her third daughter, Rhonda Ross Kendrick, with record exec Berry Gordy.

So, five children and 20 years later? That now leaves us with one Diana Ross… and eight grandchildren.

Her eldest grandson is actually a step-grandson after her son Evan married singer Ashlee Simpson in 2014.

Ashlee already had a son, Bronx, 12, from her relationship with Pete Wentz.

She and Evan now share a daughter, Jagger, six, who was born in 2015.

The proud dad previously shared an update on the birth of their first child: “We are overjoyed about the birth of our precious baby girl.”

The couple also welcomed Ziggy Blu Ross into the world in 2020.

Age-defying looks

“It takes a long time to get to be a diva,” Diana once said.

And the star has certainly earned that title – in the best way.

While in high school, she enrolled in cosmetology school, practising hairstyles on herself as well as taking on neighbours as clients.

But her signature look of beautiful curls and doe-eyed lashes came along once she became the lead singer of The Supremes.

“My mom does all her own hair and make-up, and always has,” her daughter, Tracee told the Huffington Post.

“Eyelashes, the whole deal — she does it herself.”

Now at 78, Diana still looks decades younger than her age.

Constantly asked for her skincare secrets, she once said: “I never like to think of myself as beautiful."

Return to the spotlight

The final curtain call will end with Diana Ross on stage at the BBC's Platinum Party at the Palace as part of the long weekend of celebrations for the Queen's 70 years on the throne.

It will be her first live performance in the UK for 15 years.

An in-person audience of 10,000 will no doubt be eager to catch sight of the many famous faces performing this evening, including Alicia Keys, Andrea Bocelli, Diversity and Eurovision star Sam Ryder.

Queen and Adam Lambert will open the concert for the star-studded event, paving the way for two and a half hours of musical triumph.

Diana will then be headed to Glastonbury to perform in the 'Legends Slot'

Confirming the news, she said: "I’m so excited and grateful to finally know, that I’ll be seeing you at Glastonbury while on my UK Thank U Tour celebrating my new album of songs."
