Players from Bangor 1876 and Rhyl 1879 got caught up in a massive brawl at the end of the historic derby match in North Wales in the Ardal North West division.

It was the first time the two sides had mean since they had been reformed after the collapse of the clubs when they were better known as Bangor City and Rhyl FC.

The game had been fairly calm until, but in the 73rd minute Rhyl manager Gareth Thomas was dismissed by the referee for dissent with the scores level at 1-1.

Corrig McGonigle then gave Bangor the lead before Rhyl defender Miles Todd was given his marching orders for an off-the-ball incident in the 84th minute of the contest.

In the final moments of the game tempers were heated as Bangor defender Shaun Lock got on the nerves of the Rhyl players as he attempted to waste time before their corner kick by holding on to the ball.

Lock was then confronted by three Rhyl players which caused his own team mates to come to his aid.

This is where things really heated up as Bangor’s Tom Clarke was pulled to the floor by Rhyl goalscorer Alex Jones, who also appeared to punch the defender.

While all this was going on, bottles could be seen being thrown in their direction.

The referee took control of the situation as he handed out red cards to both Clarke and Jones.

However, it did not fully diffuse the situation as Clarke carried on winding up Jones by laughing at him before Rhyl captain Reece Fairhurst got involved and tried to push him away.

Club staff and substitutes came on to the pitch in an attempt to calm down the situation

Jones himself was not done as he then charged Clarke and punched him in the face, leading to a mass brawl between both sides.

Team mates of Jones had to pull him away as touchline staff and substitutes ran onto the pitch in order to try and calm the situation.

The referee ended up handing out seven red cards in total and inevitably blowing for full-time before the corner was ever taken.

After the game rhyl manager Gareth Thomas condemened the brawl between the players.

He said on the club’s Facebook page: ‘The senes that have followed at the end are not good enough, it is not what we are building this club up to be, it is an absolute disgrace.

‘The players have to take respsonibility, not only have they let the club down they have let the hard working volunteers down and that was not good enough and it is not acceptable.

It is not something that we will be carrying on at this club.’
