Ex-Manchester United ace Bastian Schweinsteiger signs new one-year deal with Chicago Fire

FORMER Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has signed a new one-year deal with Chicago Fire.

The World Cup winner, 33, has put pen to paper on a Designated Player contract for the 2018 season.

He said: "I am very happy to re-sign with the Chicago Fire, and to continue what we started in 2017.

"Last year was a special moment for my career, but it felt incomplete without a trophy.

"But I am sure we can create another memorable season with the support of our great fans.

"I love this city, this sport, and winning, so I look forward to another season with the Fire as we progress to hopefully another level of success."

The Designated Player Rule – nicknamed the Beckham Rule – allowed MLS franchises to sign players that would be considered outside their salary cap.

Schweinsteiger joined Chicago Fire from Old Trafford on March 21 last year and has gone on to score three goals and provide six assists in 24 regular season games.

In addition, former Bayern Munich skipper Schweiny featured in his first MLS All-Star game and captained the side against Real Madrid last August.

Fire general manager Nelson Rodriguez said: "It was a priority to re-sign Bastian and we're pleased that he will remain with the club.
