Golf tips and free bets: Three picks for the Zurich Classic team event including 90-1 shot

THE Zurich Classic takes centre stage this week for the two-man event in New Orleans.

Defending champions Jon Rahm and Ryan Palmer are in town and among the favourites again.

But aside from them there are some interesting duos, including Aussie pair Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman and college mates Matthew Wolff and Collin Morikawa.

Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson, who have played the Ryder Cup together, are also involved, while the favourites are Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay.

But our man David Facey brings his tips for the week here.

Hot shots: Cameron Smith & Marc Leishman, 12-1

The Aussie duo clearly enjoyed pairing up when they represented Australia in the 2018 World Cup, finishing joint runners-up behind the Belgian duo of Thomas Pieters and Thomas Detry, who were on fire that week.

Smith is a better player now – just look at his performances at the Masters in November and again earlier this month – while Leishman looked to be running back into top form when he finished fifth at Augusta.

Mid prices: Chris Kirk and Brendon Todd, 20-1

Kirk had a massive weight lifted from his shoulders by making the most of a medical exemption to regain his PGA Tour playing rights, and has celebrated with top ten finishes in the Texas Open and the RBC Heritage last week.

Todd has not shown the form that brought him two huge wins in 2019 for a while, but is a model of consistency. His game is tailor-made for foursomes, the trickier half of the format. He and close pal Todd are both former Georgia Bulldogs and good chemistry is vital.

Matthew NeSmith & Chase Seiffert, 90-1

The Zurich often throws up a few surprise packages, and this pair have shown enough form in individual events to suggest they can combine to good effect, especially as they both average better than a birdie every five holes.

Seiffert is a late bloomer, but third place at the Honda Classic suggested there is more to come from the 29 year old.

NeSmith has forced his way onto a few more leaderboards since finishing seventh in Phoenix.

They look over-priced in an event where there is a lot of ‘dead wood’.
