Lewis Hamilton crashes out of Belgian Grand Prix on first lap

Lewis Hamilton is dumped out of Belgian GP after first-lap collision with Fernando Alonso as British star’s miserable weekend in Belgium ends early

  • Lewis Hamilton has retired from the Belgian Grand Prix on the first lap
  • He made contact with former teammate Fernando Alonso on  turn 14
  • The back half of Hamilton’s Mercedes was forced into the air and onto the gravel
  • The seven-time world champion attempted to continue but was ordered to retire 

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has crashed out of the Belgian Grand Prix in the first lap.

The seven-time world champion made contact with Fernando Alonso on turn 14 that caused the back half of his car to jump into the air before being forced off the road.

Alonso felt his former teammate had cut across him, and said into the radio: ‘What an idiot! Closing the door from the outside!’

He initially attempted to carry on but was then ordered to retire by Mercedes staff

Hamilton’s former teammate Alonso felt he had been cut across and said: ‘What an idiot!’

Valtteri Bottas has also been forced to retire after contact with Nicholas Latifi

Hamilton initially carried on but was then told to stop by Mercedes staff. It will be the first time he has not made a chequered flag this season.

Valtteri Bottas has also been forced to retire for the race after beaching his Alfa Romeo following a collision with Nicholas Latifi.

Latifi had to pit and replace his damaged front wing but will continue.

Latifi was able to continue the race after pitting to have his front wing replaced

Max Verstappen currently leads the Grand Prix despite starting down in 14th 

Away from the frantic start, championship leader Max Verstappen has advanced to first in the Grand Prix after starting down in 14th. 

His closest chaser, Charles Leclerc, has found it harder to move through the traffic but has made it to fifth.

Carlos Sainz has dropped to third after starting in pole position.
