Shock 300-1 outsider Sawbuck makes history as biggest winner EVER over jumps with easy victory at Punchestown

SHOCK 300-1 outsider Sawbuck made history as the longest-priced winner ever over jumps with an easy victory at Punchestown.

The four-year-old gelding matched the record for the biggest winner ever set by 300-1 He Knows No Fear – who won a 1m race on the Flat at Leopardstown in August 2020.

Incredibly, lucky punters were celebrating scooping massive wins after somehow backing the giant longshot.

And it was even more special for stunned jockey Charlie O'Dwyer because the horse is trained by his dad Conor.

Sawbuck ran out an easy winner by four lengths from 4-1 runner-up Ballybawn Belter in the 2m½f race over hurdles.

No one else got remotely close, with 100-30 favourite Vocito almost nine lengths back in third in the 1.20pm race.

Sawbuck was actually available at 1000 – which translates to 999-1 – on the Betfair exchange before the off.

One punter was celebrating a £1000 payout after putting a quid on.

A Coral punter put £2 each-way on and won £724.

Coral's John Hill said: "After showing little form prior to his victory at Punchestown, Sawbuck went off as a 300-1 outsider for his race, however, he has matched the record for the biggest priced winner in British and Irish racing history.

"Not many punters looked twice at the horse, but we tip out hat the customer who placed £2 each-way on the winner. They clearly saw something others had missed."

While William Hill's Tony Kenny said: ""We witnessed the joint-biggest priced winner in Irish and British racing history today as Sawbuck emerged victorious at Punchestown at 300-1, and there were a handful of lucky punters who backed him!

"A total of 28 punters chose the Conor O’Dwyer-trained runner, accounting for just 0.14 per cent of all stakes placed on the race."

Stunned jockey Charlie said: "I'm completely surprised by him.

"I thought if he just ran a nice race I'd be very happy, but he just travelled and he's done his best work at the line.

"He was being a little bit numb with me but I said to myself, 'if anyone else wants to take it [the lead in the race], they can take it'.

"His jumping is very good and he was smart."

Sawbuck had shown absolutely nothing in six previous starts.

On his sole previous run over hurdles he finished 55 lengths behind the winner in 16th after jumping off at 250-1 last November at Punchestown.

His best finish in any kind of contest was seventh – but still beaten 43 lengths at odds of 125-1 at the same track.

The Racing Post comment before his record-equalling victory said Sawbuck was a 'modest sort with no realistic chance'.
