Naturalist Chris Packham, 60, embarked on the wildlife trip with Meg for the BBC Two programme, Chris and Meg’s Wild Summer. In between complaining about ice creams and his dislike of puffins, he surprised viewers by expressing how much visits to the beach baffle him.

While the two were discussing their plans for the trip, Meg enjoyed an ice cream by the sea, while Chris complained that there were no vegan versions and had to make do with a slushie.

“What am I going to do with it?” He asked Meg, 26.

He added: “I’ve never had one of these before, is that legal?

“What’s it got in it? Radioactive waste? Look at it, seriously – I just wanted an ice cream.”

Getting nostalgic with his stepdaughter, he asked: “Do you remember when we used to measure the quality of days out by the amount of ice creams you’d had?

“We used to get home and tell mum that it had been a three ice cream day, and she’d be disgusted that I’d given you so much sugar.”

Observing the beach-goers, he commented: “I don’t get the whole beach thing, by the way.”

“Do you not?” Asked Meg, seeming stunned.

“I’ve been watching it and I don’t get it. When did people start coming to the beach for a holiday?

“Because look, all they’re doing is laying on soil.”

“I love going to the beach,” Meg replied. “You sit down, you take a breather, you watch the waves come in and out.

“It’s therapeutic.” Chris argued that he never took Meg to the beach when she was younger.

“I wouldn’t want to live far from the ocean,” she responded.

“Because it just makes me happy, there’s not a better view than this.

“Look at this coastline, it’s stunning!” Looking around, Chris asked sarcastically: “There’s not a better view than this?

“God, you’re setting the bar low.” Looking out to the sea, he observed the boats and added: “Oil tanker. Lovely.

“Love the view of an oil tanker. In fact two oil tankers, what am I talking about?”

But some viewers agreed with Chris’ take on the beach.

Taking to Twitter, one person wrote: “As ever @ChrisGPackham is a man after my own heart. I’ve never seen the point of beach holidays either. The sea is a place to look for things, not “sit on soil” #wildsummer.”

Others praised the laid back feel on the show, with a second commenting: “Is #wildsummer with @ChrisGPackham and @MeganMcCubbin the new #Gonefishing both great sunday night viewing.”

“Watching BBC2 & it strikes me that both Chris and Meg’s Wild Summer & Mortimer & Whitehouse that preceded it feature strong, fun friendships. It’s rare for TV not to centre a romantic love interest as the main relationship but friendships really can be beautiful & life affirming,” a third penned.

Another said: “Chris and Meg’s Wild Summer on BBC2 Lovely viewing, thank you Folded hands recording to watch again with my 21 year old, outdoorsy son, who will LOVE this!”
