Kathy Beale’s (Gillian Taylforth) dream wedding turned out to be anything but in EastEnders, when she learnt that her marriage to husband Rocky Cotton (Brian Conley) wasn’t actually legal.
Jo Cotton’s (Vicki Michelle) unexpected arrival resulted in a catfight as she attempted to reveal Rocky’s bigamy to the congregation.
Now, with Jo demanding £50,000 to keep her quiet, Rocky has made it his mission to raise the cash.
After a conversation with Eve Unwin (Heather Peace) about the legalities of the situation confirmed that his criminal record would not stand him in good stead when it came to building a case against Jo, he assured Kathy that he would be able to borrow the money from friends.
However, it soon became clear that not many people on his extensive friends list were willing to part with thousands of pounds, and Rocky was in some serious hot water.
Luckily for him, Elaine Peacock (Harriet Thorpe) was on hand to offer Kathy a word of advice, as she offloaded about Rocky’s predicament.
When Elaine suggested that they’re a partnership and should look into solving the problem together, Kathy revealed that she was worried about losing the security she had spent years creating by building up her businesses.
However, as she debated releasing equity and selling some assets, Freddie and Bobby’s (Bobby Brazier and Clay Milner Russell) break time football game drew her attention, and she was soon struck by an idea.
She headed home to Rocky, who had cooked her an apologetic meal in an attempt to make up for losing her Greek cruise honeymoon, and revealed her plan.
She explained how she had emptied her savings and taken out a loan to cover the blackmail.
Rocky protested, but she soon dropped another bombshell, revealing that she planned to sell the chippy to keep them afloat.
Beale’s Plaice has been in the family for many years, and as Kathy sells up, it is set to be the end of an era.
Viewers may be aware that the chip shop doesn’t strictly belong to her, but is actually the property of son Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt) who is soon set to return to the Square.
He is in for a shock when he arrives to find that both Walford East and Beale’s Plaice are no longer his, something which actress Gillian Taylforth thinks is hilarious.
‘She’s having to sell things, sell the chippy and this, that and the other…
‘And it’s funny that she sells all Ian’s stuff and not her own! I love it! See, I’m keeping my café and The Prince Albert, his stuffs gone!’
Kathy insisted to Rocky that, though their vows hadn’t been legal, they still meant something to her, and they were in this mess together.
The good news is, if she’s still struggling, she has three toaster wedding presents she can sell…
