Love Island's French fans are fuming at the “unfair portrayal” of French hunk Mehdi Edno.

The communications expert was one of the first Islanders to enter the villa during the tenth series, but he's struggled to find a connection on the show.

Having failed to find spark with now-booted Ruchee Gurung, Mehdi moved onto bombshell Whitney Adebayo – and the pair locked lips over the weekend.

The couple had become an early favourite with fans of the show, but public opinion now appears to be turning against the Frenchman as he exhibits "red flags".

He’s faced heavy criticism from fans who have accused him of being “controlling” after he appeared to incorrectly accuse Whitney of making fellow islander Jess Harding cry.

And on Monday's episode, Mehdi and Whitney clashed after Mehdi kissed lots of girls during the heart race challenge.

Some viewers claim to have spotted manipulative and controlling behaviours, highlighting the way he reacted to Whitney's mannerisms after their surprise recoupling.

He called her "disrespectful" for giggling during his speech. Whitney apologised and insisted it was just a result of her nerves.

But French fans of the star are blasting the coverage he is receiving, saying they are “unnecessarily damaging rumors.”

Posting on a Love Island France forum, one fan fumed: “They set him up! I’m not sure why, he’s not doing well.

“I love him I feel like producers are to blame for a lot of these unnecessarily damaging rumors and hate the contestants are getting.

“I’m watching the French one and I wish he went on there. Idk what would have happened but it would’ve been interesting.”

Another echoed: “i def feel like they set him up! The French are just more direct than the British he is not being controlling just honest.

“He should have gone on Love Island France he would have done much better!”

A third chimed in also pleading with the star to join the French version of the show.

“Yeah they aren’t painting him in a very good light at all he should have come on the French version of the show he’s kind of a traitor lol.”

But fans have urged Whitney to keep her distance from him after noticing several “red flags.”

"During the recoupling, Whitney was giggling because she was shy. It’s basically her way of blushing!! He even knows it takes her a while for her to open up like this, so why is he acting so…stern?”

Another fan agreed, writing: "I was liking Mehdi in the beginning, but he is screaming red flags now."
