As fans of the Starz historical drama patiently wait for the release of season six, many of them have taken to speculating about what the upcoming instalment could entail. According to one viewer, Outlander may not be all it seems, as they suggest Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) could be living in a huge time loop.

The hopeful fan took to Reddit to share their theory, which read: “I think Jamie and Claire relive their lives over and over after they’re both dead.”

They wrote: “I think Jamie waits the time needed until it’s time to go find Claire in Scotland with Frank.

“Jamie knows that Claire will respond to the ‘forget me not’ flowers that were planted at the stones, and she will come to him all over again.”

Claire first noticed the forget me not flowers at the mysterious stones, while she was on honeymoon with her husband Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies) in Scotland.

Unsure of the identity of the flowers, she returned to pick them and was unexpectedly transported to her exact location – but in the 18th century.

While in the past, she met Jamie and the two fell in love, eventually marrying.

Despite falling pregnant, Claire was forced to return to the 20th century and back to husband Frank.

He brushed off her time-travelling stories with disbelief, thinking she was mentally unwell and coming up with stories to mask trauma she encountered.

With the knowledge that she was pregnant, he agreed to keep the true identity of the father a secret and raise her child like his own.

Twenty years later, Frank suffered a fatal car crash which spurred Claire to tell daughter Brianna Fraser (Sophie Skelton) about her experience time-travelling.

Although so much time had elapsed, she decided to go back through the stones as she was desperate to reunite with Jamie.

Brianna decided against joining her mother as she wanted to finish her studies but later time-travelled to warn her parents about a fire on Fraser’s bridge.

Another fan agreed with the time-loop theory, responding: “I feel like Jamie originally dies on Culloden Moor, but after Claire travels back in time and meets him he lives because of that vision he has of Claire which gave him the will to live.”

They questioned: “But why does his ghost from Claire’s present timeline/Jamie’s original death look for her before Claire goes to the past?

“I think Claire was originally from the past and Jamie falls in love with her when they were kids but after she travels ahead in time he never had had that chance to fall in love as adults and lived his life pining for her and dies alone at Culloden with nothing left in his life.”

Before her initial journey to the past, Claire was a successful World War II nurse, so when she decided to stay to put her advanced medical knowledge to good use and help the injured.

Outlander is based on a series of best-selling novels written by Diana Gabaldon.

Unfortunately for fans, there is still a long wait before the release of season six.

Although showrunners have remained tight-lipped about the new season, fans can expect it to air in early 2022.

Outlander is available to watch on Starz and Amazon Prime.
