'Station 19' Renewal Status Is a No-Brainer for ABC — Here's Why

Although Grey’s Anatomy renewal talks for season 19 are underway, there was no mention of ABC’s Station 19 Season 6 renewal. The discussion worried avid Station 19 fans that their beloved firefighter drama might not renew. However, something drastic would have to happen to prevent Station 19 Season 6 from going forward.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ renewal talks underway

In late December 2021, Deadline reported that ABC Signature approached Ellen Pompeo to consider signing on for Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 but there was no mention of a renewal for Station 19. Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. already signed multi-year contracts before season 18 so Miranda Bailey and Richard Webber are ready to return for another year. However, Pompeo’s contract only continues through Grey’s Anatomy season 18.

Although the talks are early, executive producer and showrunner Krista Vernoff needs an answer soon. Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 returns on Feb. 24 for the second half of the season. If this season is the last one, she has a lot of planning for a finale that wraps up the long-running series.

Will ‘Station 19’ be renewed for season 6?

Ellen Pompeo is on the fence about returning for Grey’s Anatomy Season 19. If the long-running medical drama does not continue in the fall of 2022, Station 19 becomes ABC’s highest-rated scripted series. According to TV Series Finale, the Nielsen ratings for total viewership are slightly higher for Station 19 than Grey’s Anatomy for the 2021-2022 season. In the 18-49-year-old demographic, Grey’s Anatomy wins the viewership; however, Station 19 is a close second.

Whether or not Grey’s Anatomy snags a renewal with ABC, Station 19 is a sure thing. Although the firefighter drama began with Jaina Lee Ortiz as the female lead playing Andrea “Andy” Herrera, the series features an ensemble cast. The show does not feature Andy’s name in the title like Meredith Grey and Grey’s Anatomy. Unless the entire main cast of Station 19 departs the series, the show could go on without a central star or two. However, Grey’s Anatomy needs its lead to remain as popular.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ fans move to ‘Station 19’

If Grey’s Anatomy doesn’t get renewed for season 19, the Shondaland fans will likely start watching Station 19 if they haven’t already. Avid viewers still get to see Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) with her husband, Ben Warren (Jason George), on the firefighter drama. Carina DeLuca (Stefania Spampinato) moved from Grey’s to Station 19, and it makes sense that Richard Webber could appear on the series more often. Some fans on Reddit believe that Station 19 is equivalent to the early Grey’s Anatomy seasons and better than the current seasons of the medical drama. If fans have any say in it, the Station 19 renewal for season 6 in 2022 is coming.

“[Station 19] is a more powerful show, hard to say better [than Grey’s], but it definitely does some things better,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “The relationships are more powerful. The deaths are impactful. The crossover elements make it fun to watch. It’s faster-paced, more dramatic, and less predictable than Grey’s.”

On ABC, Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 and Station 19 Season 5 return for a crossover event at 8 p.m. EST on Feb. 24, 2022.
