Meet Tyson Fury's outspoken 'beast' dad

Meet Tyson Fury’s outspoken ‘beast’ dad: How bare-knuckle fighter John Fury gouged a man’s eye out after a 12-year feud over a bottle of beer – and is now using new Netflix series about the family to boost his own fame

  • John Fury’s run on Netflix may be at an end after Tyson declined a new season

Tyson Fury fans don’t have to look far to find where the boxer found his outspoken, fierce persona – his ‘beast’ of a father has pushed him since he was a child to beat the best.

‘Gypsy’ John Fury, 59, himself a former professional heavyweight, has his own notorious history in boxing, let alone outside of the sport where he has served time in prison for gouging out a man’s eye as part of a 12-year feud.

Today he again snapped up attention when he flipped a table at a press conference with his son Tommy, who is set to leave boxing retirement to face YouTuber KSI.

KSI – who will go toe-to-toe with Tommy at the AO Arena in Manchester on Saturday, October 14 – was heard mocking the Gypsy family.

He has shot to fame, aided by his son’s success, as firstly a boxer, then trainer, then criminal, and now his son’s biggest supporter.

KSI’s business partner Logan Paul – who will be fighting Dillon Danis on the same evening – was also heard criticising the Fury’s before John kicked off.

John rose from his chair and shouted ‘the Fury’s are the best fighters in the world’ to cut Logan off mid-way through his speech.

Fans received a new, calmer insight into the ex-boxer’s life with his beloved children in At Home with the Furys (Pictured: John and Tyson Fury)

He continued: ‘The Fury’s dominate. We are the best men in the world. We will fight anybody in our way’.

John finished by knocking the microphones over and flipping his table before kicking KSI’s table over too.

It comes after fans received a new, calmer insight into the ex-boxer’s life with his beloved children in At Home with the Furys, an instant online hit which has shown a softer side to the notorious fighter.

The trailer shows the chaos of their ‘busy household’ as Tyson and wife Paris, who is pregnant with her seventh child, try to do the school run, go on camping trips and head on a national tour to meet fans.

But John’s lavish lifestyle is a far way from the humble beginnings in Ireland.

John Fury was born in Tuam, Galway into a family rich in Traveller heritage. From a young age he trained as a boxer, making his professional debut in April 1987 against rugby player Adam Fogerty.

His career lasted eight years, during which time he fought in 13 bouts, winning against opponents including Michael Murray, a future British title challenger and Cesare Di Benedetto, a future Italian title challenger.

Tommy was the calmest of all four fighters when the fight kicked off – which comes as no surprise considering he is used to the chaos associated with fighting YouTubers

He is also said to have fought in bare-knuckle fights and claims he won £100,000 in one bout.

Outside of the ring, Fury had six children, Tyson, Tommy, Roman, Hughie, Shane and Romana.

His only daughter, Romana tragically died aged just a few months.

Two of his children, Tyson and Tommy, are professional boxers, with Tyson leading the way as double heavyweight world champion.

But Tommy isn’t far behind, having risen to fame on ITV’s Love Island, he is now engaged to Molly-Mae Hague, with the couple recently welcoming their first child, Bambi.

Long before Tyson ruled the world of boxing, he faced a setback when his father wound up in prison for gouging out a man’s eye.

Fury Snr was jailed in February 2011 after being found guilty of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm following a bloody fight at a car auction, which was said to be the culmination of a 12-year feud.

John Fury has now become his son’s biggest promoter – although he is not allowed to enter the US

Manchester Crown Court heard during his trial that the then-46-year-old declared himself the country’s toughest man before pouncing on his victim, who was left half-blind as a result of the attack.

Tyson, who was trained by his father at the time, supported John from the public gallery.

Despite being Tyson’s trainer, Fury then missed crucial career-building fights before his eventual release in February 2015, just four years into his 11-year sentence.

He later said: ‘He’s lost an eye and I’ve lost five years of my life.’

In the ring, Fury was even more of a terror, previously telling the Sun the fights he was involved in were often over in ‘seconds.’

He said: ‘I weren’t an especially big puncher, but, once I got going, I’d not stop swinging until they were out cold.

‘I’d not come up for air. I just wanted to kill. I’d hit them with fists, elbows, head, teeth and feet until they dropped.’

Two months after his release, Fury saw his son Tyson becoming heavyweight champion of the world after beating Wladimir Klitschko in Germany.

He is said to have had a far more calming influence over his son since his release, and recently he has become a media pundit, advertising his son’s fights to the world. However he is unable to travel to the US due to his criminal record.

He has previously criticised members of Tyson’s team, including trainer Ben Davison, who was sacked shortly after his comments.

Despite retiring decades ago, John has now found new fame thanks to the hit Netflix series At Home with the Furys, a documentary which follows Tyson and his family navigate the ups and downs of their celebrity lifestyle.

But if he was hoping to increase his fanbase further, he may be disappointed. Despite fans raving about the show online, Tyson has reportedly refused an offer from bosses to renew the show for another two series, saying he does not want to be known as a ‘reality star’.

However, as long as Fury remains as his son’s promoter, it is unlikely he will disappear from screens anytime soon.
