Four years after her death, three men and three women, known today as the Beatrice Six, were then accused of her rape and murder.

Joseph White, Thomas Winslow, Ada JoAnn Taylor, Debra Shelden, James Dean, and Kathy Gonzalez were later convicted of various crimes related to the heinous act and sentenced to decades behind bars.

According to Newsweek, five of the six confessed, however, the confessions were later found to be false.

It was not until 2008 that new DNA evidence surfaced and matched Smith, the original suspect in the case.

The Beatrice Six were then exonerated, but Smith had died in 1992 of AIDS and was unable to answer for his crime.

In 2016, a jury awarded the Beatrice Six $28million after White filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Gage County, Nebraska.

Newsweek notes that White died in 2011 in a workplace accident.
