GMB viewers in tears as Piers and Susanna pay tribute to 100,000 who died of Covid

GMB: Nadhim Zahawi reveals he lost his uncle to COVID-19

While viewers are used to seeing Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid debating with politicians and speaking to celebrities about their latest projects, today was very different. The Good Morning Britain hosts paid tribute to the 100,000 people who lost their lives due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Piers and Susanna announced they would be doing something different on Good Morning Britain.

As they left the news desk, they stood alongside a big screen with the faces of just some of the victims of coronavirus displayed.

They read out the names of some of the deceased, sharing details of their lives and the people they had left behind.

Piers began: “Good Morning Britain, it’s just gone eight o’clock and official government figures show we passed a horrendous milestone in this country.

“100,000 people have now died with coronavirus in the UK.”

“This morning, we pay tribute to all of those who have died and those who have been left behind,” Susanna continued.

“With their family’s permission, here are just some of their stories.”

As Piers and Susanna went on to pay tribute , viewers took to Twitter to reveal they were in tears.

“#gmb these tributes are very strong stuff,” one viewer shared online while another added: “To think that’s just a few of them #gmb.”

A third added: “Such a sad segment by @GMB on now but well done to @piersmorgan & @susannareid100 for doing this as these people need to be remembered. #GMB.”

Someone else continued: “Tears at #GMB how Susanna and Piers kept themselves together I will never know.

“100k people had now died in Britain due to COVID utterly heartbreaking. A beautiful segment to those who have passed.”

A fifth posted: “If you can, stop what your doing and turn on #GMB what a beautiful segment and highlights the importance that this viral is real and has affected so many amazing people and families @GMB.”

After reading out tribute, Susanna commented: “For each name and every story were have told there are at least 4000 more.”

Piers continued: “We pay tribute to each and every person who has lost their life to this dreadful virus. May they all rest in peace.”

The tributes came after Prime Minister Boris Johnson held a press concerned to reveal more than 100,000 had died of Covid-19.

He insisted he took “full responsibility” for government actions telling the public: “We truly did everything we could.”

“I’m deeply sorry for every life lost.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.
