Following the demise of Thanos in Avengers Endgame, the MCU now needs a new big baddie. And Marvel Studios has found him in time travelling despot Kang the Conqueror, who will be played by Jonathan Majors. Fans were thrilled to see the star play a Kang variant in the final episode of Loki called He Who Remains and now the character’s biggest inspiration has been bizarrely revealed to be Judy Garland.

Appearing at MCM London Comic Con’s Loki panel last weekend with co-star Tom Hiddleston and Sophia Di Martino, Majors was asked about how he prepared for He Who Remains.

The Kang star said: “I felt, ‘God I hope I can memorise all this.’ Things move at a certain pace and this has to be at the speed of escape. The speed of fun, the speed of fight.

“This guy’s in some way trying to get a deal done and that was the speed.

“So I thought there’s just all this time that he’s been around there’s been all these wonderful things.”

Majors continued: “Oddly it was Judy Garland. And I watched a lot of Judy Garland videos.”

Judy Garland was a Hollywood Golden era actress and singer best known for playing Dorthy in The Wizard of Oz.

In her private life, she struggled with substance abuse and financial instability before her accidental death from a barbiturate overdose at the age of just 47.

The Kang star explained: “And I just kind of thought like that’s that energy, that type of need to communicate.”

Majors added: “That type of internal turmoil in life but also trying to get it done. Being a showman. I love Judy Garland.

“That was the energy and ultimately play the objective…play hard. It’s got to be a fun time.

“I’m coming out for the first time and like swing for the fences, so that’s where I was at.”

Meanwhile, the three stars were completely silent on any news to do with Loki season 2, although the new series has been confirmed.

Returning to the TVA, Loki discovered to his shock that Mobius didn’t recognise him and Kang the Conqueror had taken charge. Talk about a cliffhanger for the end of season 1.

No doubt plenty of the villain’s variants will pop up in future MCU movies and TV shows.

While what we do know is that Majors is currently shooting 2023’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania at Pinewood Studios, in which Kang is the main antagonist.
