Michelle Heaton says she begged husband Hugh to leave her amid addiction hell saying 'I knew I would die'

LIBERTY X's Michelle Heaton has spoken out about the depths of her drugs and booze hell – saying she begged husband Hugh Hanley to leave her.

The 42-year-old singer said she was so convinced she would die that she didn't want him and their children around.

Michelle, who is parent to Faith, nine, and AJ, seven, with Hugh, opened up in a joint interview with OK!.

Crying, she said: “I begged him to leave. It wasn’t like I wanted to commit suicide but I knew I was going to die and Hugh and the kids would have to go through that.”

But teetotal Hugh added: “I knew if I walked away she wouldn’t have made it.”

Speaking about her boozing, Michelle explained: "I would manipulate my way out of the school run and ask someone else to get the kids.

"I’d be thinking, 'What time do I need to not be in the car so I can have a drink?'

"The cocaine wasn’t a daily thing – Covid and money wouldn’t allow it – but I was addicted to it because if it was there I couldn’t stop. It also allowed me to drink more."

The stars checked into rehab earlier this year, and has since revealed she was days from death after going on a three-year drugs and booze binge.

Michelle, who celebrated being 60 days sober last month, said: I’m surprised Hugh’s still here and I think he is, too."

Hugh added: "It put a massive strain on our marriage. A lot of people would say, 'You need to leave her and give her the wake-up call.'

"I didn’t think that was the right way to go about it. I didn’t want to give up on her or us."

Michelle shot to fame on ITV’s Popstars in 2000, leading to the formation of Liberty X a year later. After they split in 2007 she moved into writing and TV work.

A downward spiral set in when she discovered in 2012 that she was a carrier of the mutated BRCA2 gene, significantly increasing her risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

Michelle underwent a mastectomy in 2012 and two years later, chose to also undergo a hysterectomy in order to beat the odds of developing cancer.

It was at this point that Michelle revealed that she turned to drinks and drugs to cope with the "pain and suffering".
