Up to 25 British holidaymakers have been hit with food poisoning at a five-star Turkish hotel with some being left needing hospital treatment.

The guests were staying at the Rixos Sungate – an all-inclusive hotel offered by holiday firm TUI – in the Turkish Riviera when they were struck down with the illness.

The tourists are thought to have become ill last week at the resort, which offers rooms as part of getaways from Britain to southeast Turkey that can cost up to £4,000-a-week.

Brits looking for some spring sun over the Easter break flocked to the hotel in the hopes of relaxation and fun for their kids.

However, according to Kate Bracewell, whose brother had travelled there, ‘more than 10 families’ showed symptoms of food poisoning and the numbers were ‘growing by the day’.

The Mirror reports that around 25 tourists have been struck by the illness in the resort in Goynuk, about an hour from the city of Antalya.

Writing on Twitter on April 12, Mrs Bracewell said: ‘@TUIUK my family are staying in your @RixosSungate 3 people out of 5 have food poisoning from your establishment with one hospitalised. Your staff are not doing anything to help with this denying all knowledge even though other guests have complained of the same problems.

She added: ‘The mother of the children is currently unwell with two children whilst their father is in hospital with their other child. She has asked for help from staff members to no avail? Absolutely horrendous customer service.

‘The father in hospital with his daughter are both without clean clothes or phone charger to remain contact. They have asked if the hotel could get a bag of clothes and supplies to them however have not been helpful. Where is the customer service?’

On its website TUI classes the Rixos Sungate hotel as a ‘Platinum’ resort, meaning it is consistently scored highly by customers and gives it a five-star rating.

One of its selling points is that it is ‘tailored just for families’ – it comes with a waterpark attached and a kids club.

TUI’s website claims people staying at the hotel will have an English-speaking rep visiting the hotel during their stay, and they can get information and support on its app 24 hours a day.

A spokesperson for TUI told MailOnline: ‘We are concerned to hear of a small number cases at Rixos Sungate in Turkey, as health and safety of our customers is our highest priority.

‘Our team at resort are in close contact with our guests and offering support where necessary.

‘Our health and safety team are investigating in close collaboration with the hotel and we will remain in frequent contact with our guests.

‘We’d like to reassure all customers that we regularly audit all of our hotels in respect to health and safety, including hygiene.’

Accor, which owns Rixos hotels, has been contacted for comment.
